We are very proud to announce that our project “Short- and long-term effects of steroid sulfation during pregnancy on brain plasticity, maternal well-being and mother-infant bonding” has been selected for funding de La Marató de TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio 2023. This recognition highlights the importance of researching how hormonal changes during pregnancy influence maternal mental health and the bond with the baby.

This project is led by Dr. Òscar Vilarroya from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute. He will analyze steroid sulfation, a crucial mechanism that regulates the biological activity of many hormones and neurotransmitters. It will also analyze how this process impacts the mother’s brain, her emotional health and her relationship with her child, using data from a unique cohort of almost 500 women that we have followed for more than 15 years. This information includes MRIs, biological samples (urine and saliva), and mental health assessments. In addition, we will compare data with women who have not been mothers, to better understand the short- and long-term effects of this process.

This support will allow us to advance the understanding of essential processes such as brain neuroplasticity and maternal well-being. This will open new avenues for treatments and support strategies in reproductive health.

We would like to deeply thank La Marató de TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio for their trust and commitment to the research. We are filled with happiness to be one of the 26 projects related to sexual and reproductive health selected from more than a hundred nominations. So this recognition reinforces our mission to contribute to the well-being of mothers and families through science. We continue to work to provide knowledge and solutions that improve the lives of many people.

Thanks to everyone who makes this project possible!
